My Value Picks
Pitcher
Shelby Miller, Cardinals, $6,000: Miller had been exceptionally good for the Cardinals over the last couple of weeks. In his last five starts spanning 33 innings, Miller has given up only four earned runs. This hot streak coincides with a great matchup for the young righty tonight as he takes the mound against the Cubs.
Catcher
Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers, $2,900: Lucroy has shown flashes of being one of the better hitting catchers in baseball and this year he is proving it. After a rough stretch in the middle of the season Lucroy has refound his stroke as the season winds down by batting .389 since September 10th. The matchup is going to be a very tough one facing Johnny Cueto but he was just touched up for six runs in what was likely his worst start of the year, his last start showing that he isn’t knittable.
First Base
Freddie Freeman, Braves, $3,000: Whenever you see a superstar like Freeman at this low of a price he is almost a must start as long as he is batting .100 over the past month. Normally a matchup against Gerrit Cole, is a tough one but he has regressed in his second season with a 3.85 ERA this year.
Second Base
Robinson Cano, Mariners, $3,000: Cano has been a steady force in the Mariners lineup all season long. Even though Cano isn’t going to drive in 100 runs this year or extend his streak to 25 or more homeruns to 6 years in a row he is still a very dangerous batter in a great hitter’s park tonight in Toronto.
Third Base
Evan Longoria, Rays, $3,300: Longoria has been very productive at the plate over the last two weeks. During that span he has two homeruns, and seven RBI and runs scored. Even though the batting average is not there a player is more valuable when he is driving in and scoring runs than when he is just reaching base with no counting stats.
Short Stop
Alexei Ramirez, White Sox. $2,800: Always known to be a great second half of the season Ramirez is living up to that by batting a respectable .286 with seven RBI, seven runs scored, with a homerun and a steal over the last two weeks. Ramirez is a big part of the White Sox offense so if they are going to score some runs today expect him to be a part of it.
Outfield
Torii Hunter, Tigers, $3,000: Hunter is on fire the last week batting .389 with two homeruns, seven RBI and four runs scored. On the mound to night for the White Sox is Scott Carroll who has an ERA just above five for the year. Carroll is not a likely candidate to go deep into the game either which is going to expose a vulnerable white Sox bullpen.
