Fantasy Baseball: Hitters To Add - April 24, 2014

I am sure by now there are some players on your fantasy team that you are getting fed up with already due to their slow start.  There is nothing you can do about it but hop they can eventually turn it around sooner rather than later.  You may be hesitant to replace them but let me tell you that there are some quality players on the waiver wire that will strike your interest and will most likely help your team in many categories.  There are no guarantees as to how long these players stay hot but I suggest you jump on the bandwagon while it’s still rolling.  Here are some batters you should add to your team:

Catcher – Devin Mesoraco, Reds

The catcher position is a very thin one and finding a catcher who can hit for average and power is difficult to find nowadays.  Mesoraco is not an everyday player so I can see why he may not be as valuable but if you have the space to pick him up, do it right now.  He has been on fire in his 10 games since making his season debut April 8 with 20 hits in 37 at-bats giving him a .541 average.  He also has three homeruns, 12 RBI’s and a stolen base.  That is outstanding for how many at-bats Mesoraco has and how many games he played in this season.  You may already have a catcher in place in your line up but it will not hurt one bit of having a backup of this caliber on your squad.

First Base – Justin Morneau, Rockies

As of Tuesday, Morneau is on a seven game hitting streak while having 12 RBI’s, three homeruns, and six runs scored in that span.  It is safe to say that he is on fire right now and is exactly what the Rockies wanted when they signed him in the offseason.  He is quickly being added to teams across all fantasy leagues so you will need to act fast to snatch him up before your opponents do.  Morneau is posting a .347 batting average so far this season with no signs of letting up.  He is on pace to have a much better season then he did in 2013.

First Base – Ryan Howard, Phillies

Howard has really been on the downfall the past couple seasons, most of that being his inability to stay healthy.  His strikeouts are still as much as it always been and it seems like he will literally be a hit or miss batter this season.  But the good thing is that he already hit about half the homeruns he hit last season with five and also has 13 RBI’s.  At this rate he will put up some impressive numbers this year and make fantasy owners kick themselves for not picking him up off waivers when they had the chance (this is when you go in your fantasy league and pick him up before that is you!)

Second Base – Neil Walker, Pirates

With six home runs in just 81 at-bats, Walker is nearly halfway to his homer total (16) from all of last season with six.  The increased power production has been muted to a degree by a substandard .262 average, but home runs are often difficult to come by at the second base position.  This is why he is a solid backup player on your team and likely a starter in deeper leagues.  The batting average will not be what you want from him but it looks like he will supply you the power and RBI’s that are not common at second base.

Outfield – Eric Young, Mets

If there is any type of breathe of fresh air on the Mets team it is Eric Young Jr.  He is not the best all around hitter because he will lack in the batting average and homeruns department but will exceed in gaining you stolen bases and runs scored.  Young already has 10 stolen bases and 16 runs scored this season and is showing that he can easily reach over 50 stolen bases this season if he stays healthy.  As long as he can reach first base he has a great chance of getting a stolen base and/or scoring a run.  He is a great asset if you are lacking in those categories.

Outfield – Michael Brantley, Indians

Brantley could be a breakout player this season for the Indians.  He ranks fourth in the MLB in RBI’s with 18 and is batting just under .300 with four homeruns and three stolen bases.  He can be a player that will help all categories on your fantasy team.  Brantley had 17 stolen bases last season and will probably have more this season possibly stealing over 20.  As long as he keeps up the clutch hitting with runners in scoring position, he will be an excellent piece to add in your outfield.
