If you are running thin at short stop there is a guy by the name of Adeiny Hechavarria who may be worth a look. In a standard ten team league Hechavarria is likely to only give you short run help while he is on his hot streak. In the long run his numbers are going to balance out and you will be able to find better players to add out of free agency such as Stephen Drew if he ever finds a new job. In a 12 or more team league or an N.L. only league Hechavarria is worth taking a shot on, only because shortstop is a very shallow position and he is likely your best option or deep league.
At this point Hechavarria is playing above his level with a .327 batting average. While the seven runs scored looks nice, he hasn’t scored or put up any counting stats over his last five games. As of now Hechavarria bats in the bottom of the lineup outside when there is a left-handed pitcher on the mound. Batting at the bottom of a lineup that is not deep is going to hurt him all season long. It’s difficult to score or drive in runs while hitting in the bottom third of the order.
Hechavarria is not much of a base stealer, as he stole only 11 in 2013. There is also no power upside at all to owning Hechavarria after only hitting three all of last season. For the moment Hechavarria is at least helping in the batting average category. Regression is sure to follow soon though as it is going to be nearly impossible for him to keep up this high rate of hitting. In 2014 Hechavarria is batting .100 points higher than in 2013 (.327 compared to .227). Once that average begins to fall though, it will be best to look elsewhere.
For now Hechavarria is thriving in a Marlins offense that is hitting above its potential. Once the offense begins to struggle and the other players begin to play back down to their potential so will Hechavarria which really puts a damper on whatever potential you were hoping to get out of him.
With lack of ability to drive in runs or score due to his poor spot in the lineup there is little upside to owning Hechavarria in anything outside of an extremely deep mixed league or an N.L. only league.
