Fantasy Baseball: Sell High on Jose Abreu

Remember a guy by the name of Chris Shelton? He was the Detroit Tigers first baseman on Opening Day 2006. And he hit nine home runs in the first thirteen games in the 2006 season.

Flash forward to 2014 and we are talking about another American League Central first baseman with an incredibly hot start - a guy by the name of Jose Abreu.

You see, Abreu, the rookie first baseman for the Chicago White Sox, currently leads baseball with twelve home runs. It is an incredible statistic, but a small sample size of major league play (just one month) should raise a red flag right away.

What happened to Chris Shelton? He got so cold after his fluky hot start that he was released before season's end.

Now, there are many differences between Abreu and Shelton. The biggest one is that Abreu, a Cuban defector, was expected to be one of the league's better power hitters some day while Shelton came out of nowhere. Abreu, unlike Shelton, will not go away. In fact, expect him to be a feared power hitter for years and years to come.

So why compare him to Shelton? Why sell Abreu now if he won't drop off like him?

The answer is simple. Do you really expect Jose Abreu to hit twelve home runs every month? Do you? After all, that's essentially the only reason you would be so reluctant to trade him while his name sounds like a must-have on your fantasy team.

Abreu's power numbers are through the roof, yes, but many fantasy owners will neglect to realize that he is hitting .254 despite his hot streak, and that he should certainly not be expected to keep up the pace he has been on.

Abreu may hit 30 homers, but don't expect many more. Remember, he already has twelve and that number will not climb very swiftly throughout the rest of the season. Without the consistent home runs, he is not nearly as valuable as many would consider. This makes him a perfect trade candidate if you own him.

Your opponents will likely be chomping at the bit for Abreu. Take advantage of them and get them to grossly overpay for someone who is bound to experience some growing pains.
