Fantasy Baseball: Top Five Second Basemen of the First Half

1. Jose Altuve, Houston Astros

2016 Statistics: .341 average, 14 homers, 51 RBI, 67 runs, 40 extra-base hits and 23 steals (390.0 fantasy points)

A true MVP candidate heading into the second half of the season, Altuve is the second-best fantasy position player right now. His 2016 season has been absolutely absurd. The All-Star is on pace for 217 hits, 26 homers, 44 doubles, 122 runs scored and 93 RBI to go with 42 steals. Those are some ridiculous numbers right there.

From a fantasy perspective, Altuve has been the most consistent performer at any position outside of Josh Donaldson. He's tallied seven-plus fantasy points in 27 percent of his games thus far this season.

2. Daniel Murphy, Washington Nationals

2016 Statistics: .348 average, 17 homers, 66 RBI, 53 runs and 46 extra-base hits (336.8 fantasy points)

Murphy is in the midst of a breakout season that has seen him put up some of the best numbers among position players in the entire game. The veteran is on pace for 30-plus homers, 123 RBI and an absurd 86 extra-base hits.

Here's a guy that's also tallied only nine double-digit fantasy performances. This means he's not been able to lift DFS squads up on his own, but remains a consistently good performer to put out there on a daily basis. That's better than the boom or bust options we've seen among the elite fantasy players thus far this season.

3. Robinson Cano, Seattle Mariners

2016 Statistics: .313 average, 21 homers, 58 RBI, 64 runs and 45 extra-base hits (341.8 fantasy points)

Cano is having his best season since joining the Mariners back in 2014. The seven-time All-Star is the 12th-best overall fantasy player heading into the Midsummer break and is on pace for 38 homers and 100-plus RBI while already tallying 45 extra-base hits.

Of the 89 games Cano has appeared in, he's put up six-plus fantasy points 25 times, including double-digit marks 10 times. This has Cano proving himself to be among the best all-around players in the game heading into the second half.

4. Ian Kinsler, Detroit Tigers

2016 Statistics: .289 average, 16 homers, 52 RBI, 71 runs and 36 extra-base hits (329.8 fantasy points)

Even after putting up a solid 2015 season with Detroit that saw him hit .296 with 11 homers and 73 RBI, no one could possibly see his performance this year coming. He's on pace to put up five-year hights in homers, RBI, runs scored, doubles and extra-base hits. Considering he's getting up there in age at 34. this is incredibly surprising.

From a fantasy perspective, Kinsler's performance has been off the charts. He's averaging 3.9 points per game and has tallied seven-plus fantasy points in a quarter of his games thus far this season.

5. Ben Zobrist, Chicago Cubs

2016 Statistics: .283 average, 13 homers, 47 RBI, 59 runs and 36 extra-base hits (297.5 fantasy points)

Zobrist's first season with the Cubs has resulted in a starting nod at second base in the All-Star Game. It also has him on pace to post career-high numbers across the board. We're looking at 25-plus homers, 90-plus RBI and 70-plus extra-base hits if he keeps up at his current pace. Those are elite-level numbers right there.
