Here it is, the final week of the first half of the regular season. This is the last chance that any fantasy owner will have to snag any budding talent, or player on a hot streak who currently resides on the waiver wire before the All-Star break puts a halt to everyone’s momentum. Why buy new talent when you can pick up these guys for free?
Aaron Hill Arizona Diamondbacks 2B
Since returning from an extended tenure on the DL on June 25th, Diamondbacks’ second baseman Aaron Hill has been on fire. Many fantasy owners opted to drop Hill during his time away and this is your chance to go in for the steal. Hill has been batting an astonishing .326 with one home run, seven RBI and 24 total bases, hitting safely in all but four of the 13 games he’s played in. Hill’s stock will only continue to rise so get him as soon as possible. He’s currently owned in roughly 82 percent of all leagues.
Ricky Nolasco Los Angeles Dodgers SP
Ricky Nolasco was acquired by the Dodgers on Saturday which sent four prospects to the Miami Marlin to complete the deal. Despite having a 5-8 record and a 3.85 ERA, Nolasco shows a tremendous amount of promise and will benefit from being on a team that will actually provide him run support. Players like Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez have been lighting it up offensively of late and will be sure to assist you in your decision to pick up a bonified arm in the starting rotation. What’s to lose? Noalsco is currently owned in roughly 28 percent of all leagues.
Jayson Werth Washington Nationals OF
Jayson Werth has been an unusual oddity this Major League Baseball season, and not because of his amazing beard; he’s actually producing in a big way offensively. Werth has become a major contributor in all of the Nationals’ wins over the last month. Specifically, in the Nationals’ last six wins Werth has had 12 base knocks including a home run and three doubles. Werth’s power game has taken a bit of a tumble, but he’s still able to get on base and bring runs in. If anything, he would make for a great platoon guy. He’s currently hitting .287 on the year with eight home runs, 28 RBI and is currently owned in roughly 56 percent of all leagues.
Scott Downs Los Angeles Angels RP
The Angeles haven’t had much to shine about with the exception of Mike Trout; however, Scott Downs has been quietly building a solid season. Since April 26th Downs has recorded two wins and an impressive 14 holds. In the process he dropped his ERA from 3.00 down to 1.48 and his WHIP is down to 1.19. Don’t expect a lot of strikeouts from Downs, but also don’t expect a lot of walks to be given up either. He’s currently owned in roughly six percent of all leagues.
Jhonny Peralta Detroit Tigers SS
Jhonny Peralta came as a bit of a surprise to most people for making the American League All-Star roster, chalking it up to a pick by manager Jim Leyland. What very few seem to realize is that Peralta is actually tied with Oakland Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie in hits (96) in the AL at that position, but has a slight edge in batting average at .306. Peralta is also third in home runs for AL shortstops with seven and third in RBI with 41. Surprisingly he’s still a free agent in some leagues, 25 percent to be exact. You really might want to consider this one.
