Fantasy Baseball: Top-Five Week Three Additions

As the second week of the Major League Baseball season wrapped up, definite hopefuls have emerged and have continued to stay consistent, thus proving that early season surges have been more than a mere fluke. Five players in particular have made great strides and would make for an excellent addition to any fantasy owner’s squad… just as long as they’re still available in your league.

Torii Hunter Detroit Tigers OF

Torii Hunter has played in all 12 games for the Detroit Tigers this season, and in only one of those games has Hunter not gotten a hit. On top of that, in the 11 games that Hunter has gotten a hit, eight of them have been multi-hit games. Hunter has the second-best average on the team, batting an unprecedented .407 with eight RBIs and one home run. Basically, you’d be hurting your team by not having him start every game. He is currently owned in 77 percent of all leagues.

Starling Marte Pittsburgh Pirates OF

Starling Marte had a fairly successful rookie campaign in 2012; batting .257 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 167 at-bats. This season; however, Marte’s star has taken off. He is currently the most productive offensive player on the Pittsburgh Pirates, even overshadowing the likes of Andrew McCutchen with his .357 average, one home run and seven RBI. Marte is currently owned in roughly 54 percent of all leagues.

Ross Detwiler Washington Nationals P

In his two appearances this season Ross Detwiler has been proving he can hang with the best in the business. So far he has yet to record a decision, so depending on how your league is scored this may cause a slight problem. Detwiler currently has a modest six strikeouts, but his ERA (0.69) and WHIP (1.00) are impeccable. Detwiler is currently owned in roughly 34 percent of all leagues and can be utilized as a relief pitcher, making him a deeper threat for some.

Michael Young Philadelphia Phillies 1B, 2B, 3B

It seemed like no one had much faith in Michael Young except for the Philadelphia Phillies, and boy did they come out looking like a bunch of geniuses. Young is currently the best, most consistent bat for the Phillies with a .357 average and 22 total bases. Young would make for an excellent pick-up on any team due to the fact that he can platoon in almost every infield position. He is currently owned in roughly 79 percent of all leagues and going fast.

Barry Zito San Francisco Giants P

In 2012 Barry Zito did a fine job of reviving his career and so far in 2013 he has yet to slow down. The World Series champion is proving to be the best pitcher on the San Francisco Giants staff with eight strikeouts, a 1.00 WHIP and a 0.00 ERA in two stars which both ended in wins for Zito. He is currently owned in roughly 64 percent of all leagues. What the hell are you waiting for?
