Fantasy Baseball: Top-Five Week Three Drops

The end of the second week of the Major League Baseball season has really lifted the veil off the eyes of a lot of fantasy baseball owners who hoped the first week jitters of some of their studs was merely a fluke. Unfortunately false hope is just that, and things may progressively get worse for these players, as well as any chances you have of winning a championship in your fantasy league with these guys still on your squad.

Jason Heyward Atlanta Braves OF

The former top prospect for the Atlanta Braves, Jason Heyward is off to a terrible start. He is currently batting .103 with one home run and four runs batted in. Most analysts have touted him as a reliable, powerful force at the plate; however, his numbers have yet to really prove that especially in reflection to the amazing year he had in 2012. There are better options available in the outfield.

Josh Johnson Toronto Blue Jays P

Josh Johnson is hemorrhaging runs for the Toronto Blue Jays. His ERA currently stands at 11.05 with a WHIP of 2.45 in two starts on the season thus far. Johnson was one of the few pitchers in Spring Training who was looking to be a steal of everyone’s fantasy draft. Things may improve down the line, but for now it’s best to cut him loose to save your ERA.

Mike Moustakas Kansas City Royals 3B

Mike Moustakas had a decent first full year in 2012 with 20 home runs and a .242 average; however, 2013 is proving to be a mistake pick for fantasy owners. His .158 average is one of the worst on a Kansas City Royals team which looks to be improving on the whole. Moustakas has played in 10 games this season and has yet to hit a home run or plate more than one base runner. Cut him loose now and find a much more reliable person for your third base spot.

Jason Kipnis Cleveland Indians 2B

Like Moustakas, Jason Kipnis is a sinking stone on the newly revived Cleveland Indians. He is currently batting .125 with two RBI and one run scored in eight games this season. Kipnis is still a highly rated second baseman; however, this rough start is not looking to fix itself in the near future. Do yourself a favor and let him go.

Victor Martinez Detroit Tigers DH/C

The Detroit Tigers are the best hitting team in MLB; however, they have one of the worst hitters in 2013 in the middle of their lineup. Victor Martinez missed all of 2012 after tearing his ACL and was expected to be an additional power to compliment Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. So far this season Martinez is hitting .146 with four RBI and one run scored. Even though Martinez is a good fit for a catchers slot, the reality is that there are way more effective guys currently holding their own on the free agency wire. It would be best to drop Martinez and add one of them.
