Fantasy Baseball: Top-Five Week Two Additions

The first week of the fantasy baseball season has come and gone. By now half of you are looking like a bunch of geniuses, while the other half of you are looking for the largest rock to hide under. No need to get bent out of shape quite yet; there are plenty of opportunities and players available to help you bounce back in the upcoming weeks. Here are a few guys to scoop up immediately to help alleviate the bleeding.

1. Jed Lowrie, Oakland Athletics, Shortstop

While most people decided to flat-out write off the Oakland Athletics this season, those who did apparently forgot that the A’s have quite a few additions to their arsenal. The biggest factor this season has no doubt been the addition of Jed Lowrie. By the time games started on April 1 Lowrie was owned in roughly 11 percent of the leagues on Yahoo! Shame. In the first week Lowrie has a .500 batting average with three home runs, six runs batted in, seven runs and four doubles, 13 total hits and 26 total bases. He is currently owned in 64 percent of all leagues.

2. Chris Getz, Kansas City Royals, Second Base

One of the sleeper picks of the season, Chris Getz is proving to be one of the most consistent bats of the American League. Last week against the Philadelphia Phillies Getz fell a home run shy of the cycle and has logged 10 total bases with a .316 batting average, four runs batted in and five runs scored. He is currently owned by one percent of all leagues. Wow!

3. Joe Smith, Cleveland Indians, Relief Pitcher

For those of you looking for a quality relief pitcher for your squad, look no further than Joe Smith of the Cleveland Indians. So far on the season Smith has a hold, a save and three strikeouts in only three innings of work in three games. His 0.33 walks and hits per innings pitched is an attractive quality along with his 0.00 earned run average. He is also a great addition in case Chris Perez goes through a routine letdown stage reminiscent to his 2012 campaign. Smith is currently owned in roughly six percent of all leagues.

4. Mark Reynolds, Cleveland Indians, First Base and Third Base

Reynolds is batting .300. Once again, Mark Reynolds is batting .300. The first base/third base hybrid for the Cleveland Indians is off to an unprecedented start crushing four home runs, a double and seven runs batted in. He’s only struck out six times thus far, which is only an average of once per game, which isn’t terrible at the moment. This week he’s going against the New York Yankees, a team he clubbed 14 home runs off of and batted an impressive .275 against in 39 career games. He is currently owned in 46 percent of all leagues.

5. John Buck, New York Mets, Catcher

Like Reynolds, Buck is another peculiar oddity on the season thus far. Once a kicker addition of major trades the last few seasons, Buck has found his swing with the Mets. He is currently averaging .400 on the season with two home runs, nine runs batted in and 15 total bases. His numbers are currently in the Top-five amongst catchers thus far and he is only owned by 25 percent of all leagues. Get him fast before he's gone!
