Mere months after trading Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for a bounty of top-level prospects, the New York Yankees have brought back the World Series winner on a record-breaking five-yer, $86 million contract.
Not only is this a huge move for the Yankees as a team, it has wide-ranging fantasy implications.
This past season saw the flame-throwing Chapman post a 1.55 ERA and 0.86 WHIP while striking out 14 batters per nine innings. In an interesting turn, his ERA was a full point lower with the Cubs (1.01) than it was with the Yankees (2.01).
With that said, Chapman himself was still pretty dominating in New York, posting nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings. He also posted a 1.59 ERA and 0.82 ERA at Yankee Stadium.
With the addition of Chapman, Dellin Betances moves back into the setup role with Tyler Clippard likely taking over seventh-inning duties. This might not be the reformed Cubs bullpen, but that's a whole lot of head at the back end in New York.
This will have a direct impact on the statistical performance we see from ace Masahiro Tanaka as well as youngster Justus Sheffield, who could very well see the big league club at some point this upcoming season. It might also play a role in who New York brings in to solidify what promises to be a weak rotation.
