The New York Yankees have added a power hitter to the equation in the lead up to free agency. Multiple reports suggest that the Yankees have signed 2016 National League Home Run Champion Chris Carter to a one-year, $3 million contract. 

This isn't necessarily a surprising move for a Yankees team that needs power in the lineup. It is, however, a tad surprising that Carter had to wait this long to receive what amounts to a bargain basement deal on the free agency market. 

Carter, 30, hit .222 with 41 homers and 94 RBI while leading the league with 206 strikeouts for the Milwaukee Brewers last season. It's Carter's fourth consecutive season with 20-plus homers. Though, during that very same span, he has led the league in strikeouts twice. 

Carter is the prime example of someone that's almost literally hit or miss. A total of 69 of his 122 hits this past season were of the extra-base variety. He also hasn't posted an on-base percentage of above .321 during in any of the past four years. 

The expectation here is that Carter will split time with Greg Bird at first base while doing acting as a DH in lieu of Matt Holliday at times. A right-handed hitter, Carter has posted a .221 average with a .266 BABip against left-handed pitchers in his career. 

There's almost no value here in the fake baseball world outside of his ability to hit the long ball. Now unlikely to be an every-day player, that's magnified even further.
