The Minnesota Twins made a rare foray into the free-agent market on Tuesday, reportedly signing catcher Jason Castro to a three-year, $24.5 million contract.
Castro was made expendable by the Houston Astros after the team acquired Brian McCann from the New York Yankees in a trade earlier this month.
Limited at the plate, Castro does very little when it comes to the fantasy baseball world. Last season saw him hit just .210 with 11 homers and 32 RBI while posting a low .307 on-base percentage.
Though, his addition might very well help the Twins' pitchin staff due to the veteran's plus-level ability to call games. After all, Astros pitchers posted a splendid 3.67 ERA when Castro was behind the plate this past season.
From a fantasy perspective, the expectation here has to be that Ervin Santana will benefit the most. The veteran may have put up a sub .500 record last season, but he did tally a solid 3.38 ERA to go with seven-plus strikeouts per nine innings. Should he remain on he Twins, Santana might very well see his production jump a notch or two in 2017.
