The Oakland Athletics added a strong left-handed hitter to their roster on Wednesday, signing outfielder Matt Joyce to a two-year, $11 million deal.
Joyce, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a minor league deal last spring, performed exceptionally well with the big league club when he got the call early in the year. Joyce may have hit just .242, but he posted a stellar .403 on-base percentage and hit 13 homers in just 231 at-bats.
Joyce figures to be a part of a platoon in the outfield for the A's this upcoming season. Last year saw 197 of his 231 at-bats come against right-handed hitting. He posted a .244/.406/.884 split against pitchers that toed that side of the rubber.
From a year-long fantasy aspect, Joyce is irrelevant. Though, he can very well be a solid under-the-radar DFS play throughout the season. In this, it's all about matchups. Though, it must be noted that the 31-year-old outfielder has hit just .181 average with a .272 OBP in 81 career at-bats at Oakland Coliseum.
