Fantasy Impact of the Indians Signing Edwin Encarnacion

Prior to the holiday vacation, the defending American League champions made some rather big news, adding power hitter Edwin Encarnacion on a three-year, $60 million free-agent deal.

All this does is add to one of the best lineups in the game. And from a fantasy perspective, it has wide-ranging implications. Here, we look at said implications for both Encarnacion and the rest of the Indians' lineup.

The first important thing to note here is that Encarnacion has had mixed results hitting at Cleveland's Progressive Field. In 22 games at his new home park, Encarnacion has posted a .275 averaging with a poor .327 on-base percentage. His 25.3 percent strikeout rate is higher than his career splits as well. Though, with that comes a relatively lofty .438 BABip, which ranks sixth for EE as it relates to Major League parks.

Coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him strikeout a career-high 138 times, that might be of some concern for fantasy owners. This is until we realize that EE also posted career highs in homers (42) and RBI (127), the latter category leading the Junior Circuit.

With Encarnacion set to take over for Mike Napoli, the Indians' lineup itself just got a ton stronger. He's likely slide in fifth, providing protection for both Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor. This is some relatively huge news, especially for Lindor, who posted a solid .324 BABip a season ago. With more pitches to hit, expect him to improve off last year's All-Star performance.

That's the biggest takeaway here, even more so than what EE brings to the table. Lindor has proven himself to be a valuable fantasy commodity. That should be taken to a whole new level with Encarnacion hitting behind him in the lineup. Though, as most of you can realize, this depends heavily on where the Indians slot their new power hitter into the lineup.

We'll evaluate all these big moves once more is decided during the spring. But for now, don't avoid EE simply because of his high K-rate last season and questionable success in Cleveland. Also, make sure to value Lindor higher with Encarnacion in the lineup.
