In their continued efforts to address their rotation woes, the Seattle Mariners struck a trade on Friday to land Yovani Gallardo from the Baltimoe Orioles. In exchange, Baltimore landed outfielder Seth Smith to address its outfield depth.
There is limited fantasy appeal here, but every starting pitcher has to be looked at so let's take a quick look at how this trade impacts Gallardo.
Simply put, no one would want to use Gallardo in fantasy last season. The 30-year-old hit on the trifecta for things you avoid in a fantasy starting pitcher. Across 23 starts last season, Gallardo had a 5.42 ERA and gave up a 1.22 HR/9. Giving up home runs and having a five-plus ERA is trouble in itself, but when you throw in that he hardly kept up K/9 above six, while he had a 4.56 BB/9, the numbers were miserable.
If you want to be optimistic, you can look at his 3.42 ERA last season and 3.51 ERA in 2014. He kept his BB/9 below four and while he didn't strike many guys out, he kept the runs down and kept his teams in the game.
Going on his age-31 season, this will be the first time in Gallardo's career that he makes more than half his starts in a pitcher's park. But with a K/9 that has dropped and a BB/9 on a steady rise, command of the strike zone is becoming more of a problem.
His HR/9 should drop this year below the 1.22 mark he had last season and could sink to around .8-.95, so there should be some improvement there. But the command remains a concern and while the ERA should drop, Gallardo shouldn't be considered in anything but deep 14-team leagues or A.L. only leagues.
