The St. Louis Cardinals made sure to move on from the news that they lost two draft picks in the entire hacking scandal. The team announced that it has signed 25-year-old starting pitcher Carlos Martinez to a five-year, $51 million extension. 

Martinez is coming off a tremendous 2016 campaign that saw him post a 16-9 record with a 3.04 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 31 starts. He also struck out 174 batters in 195.1 innings. 

What makes this deal so important from a fantasy perspective is the dynasty lens. This takes him through his arbitration years of 2017, 2018 and 2019 while adding two more years to Martinez's deal. 

Though, there's definitely an interesting dynamic at play here. Just look at Martinez's splits from last season. 

Martinez posted a 9-2 record with a 2.45 ERA and 1.25 WHIP on the road. Comparatively, he was 7-7 with a 3.60/1.20 split at home. 

This tells us a story of a young pitcher that surprisingly performs well away from his home crowd. 

Flushed with ace stuff, Martinez's presence in the Cardinals' rotation should be a boon for those who own him in the fantasy baseball world over the long term. Continuity itself never hurts a pitcher in his situation with his level of experience.
