The Washington Nationals have placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist contusion. The move is retroactive to August 1st, the last time Zimmerman suited up. 

The 31-year-old infielder is hitting just .222 with 12 homers and 38 RBI on the season. His struggles come following a 2015 season that saw him hit just .249 with a .308 on-base percentage. The former All-Star's struggles coincide with an injury-plagued 2014 season that saw him play in just 61 games. 

With Zimmerman out, veteran Clint Robinson will take over most of the duties at first. He's hitting .212 with five homers and 22 RBI on the season. Needless to say, first base has been somewhat of an issue for the Nationals at the plate. 

Zimmerman is eligible to return on the 16th. It will be interesting to see if his performance at the plate improves or if what we've seen over the past two years is his new normal.
