The Boston Red Sox have added an elite-level late-inning guy to go with dominating closer Craig Kimbrel. The team reportedly acquired Addison Reed from the New York Mets for three prospects.
Reed, 28, has been stellar thus far this season. He's pitching to a 2.57 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out well over one batter per inning. The veteran has also posted 19 saves for an otherwise hapless Mets team.
What this move does is shorten the game for the likes of Chris Sale and David Price in the Red Sox' rotation. Outside of Kimbrell, Boston has struggled late in game with the bullpen being called into action. It's led to Sale receiving losses/no decision in five combined games in which he's yielded a total of 10 runs.
From a Mets perspective, they acquired three reliever prospects for a player in Reed that is set to become a free agent this winter. Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Stephen Nogosek all ranked within the Red Sox' top-25 prospects according to MLB.com.
Of those three, Callahan could be the closest to the Majors. He's pitched to a 3.21 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP in 32 appearances between Double-A and Triple-A on the season. A high strikeout pitcher, he could potentially be seen as a long-term option to close out games for New York.
As it stands right now, a struggling Fernando Salas might be called on to close out games over the short term. Then again, Paul Sewald and his 52 Ks in 42 innings might be a better option for the Mets.
