Just a day into the regular season and the New York Yankees outfield depth is taking another hit. Center fielder Aaron Hicks apparently suffered an injury to his ribs yesterday, though there were no reports of it after the game, as a result he will land on the 10-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, the team called up outfielder Billy McKinney and he will make his MLB debut today in left field.
It's still not known how Hicks suffered the injury or how severe the injury is, but for now we'll operate with the idea Hicks will be out for the next 10 days. If your league holds DL spots, given his power/speed potential and his spot in New York's lineup, Hicks is someone to absolutely hang onto for when he returns.
In his absence, Brett Gardner will slide over to center field. It shouldn't influence Gardner's fantasy value at all, given many expected him to play almost every day, but it could help him get closer to retaining center field eligibility for fantasy leagues in the 2019 season. Giancarlo Stanton should also see time in left field, though he already carries outfield eligibility, so that won't carry much weight for the majority of fantasy owners.
McKinney posted a .306/.336/.541 slash line in Triple-A last season, though he posted a .250 batting average in an earlier stint playing ball at the Double-A level. McKinney doesn't offer any especially intriguing fantasy tools, so it's best to leave him on the waiver wire for the time being.
