Is Matt Harvey A Legitimate Cy Young Contender?

Is Matt Harvey A Legitimate Cy Young Contender?

Tell me if this sounds familiar. The New York Mets have a Cy Young candidate, who is making big moves at the major league level. Matt Harvey is doing his best R.A. Dickey impression and is trying to keep the National League Cy Young award in the big apple. Before we get into the whole Cy Young talk, let me fill you in on who this guy is.

Harvey is a 24-year-old starting pitcher, with some filthy pitches in his arsenal. At only 24 years old, Harvey has already checked off a few records on his bucket list. He holds the New York Mets record for most strikeouts in a debut, with 11. He also just received the NL Pitcher of the Month award for April and has been dominating hitter after hitter.

To really know how good this guy is, we have to look at what he has done over this small window of time. He is currently 4-0 with a 1.44 ERA in eight starts. You might expect him to have more wins but you also have to remember he is playing for the Mets. He is also third in all of baseball in strikeouts with 62, trailing only A.J. Burnett and Yu Darvish.

The question is whether or not he can do this over the next four and a half months. If the answer is yes then there is a good chance that the Cy Young could stay in NY. This is just one way to look at it. I believe that he will have a good season but do not think that he can perform at this level for the entire season. I suspect he will start to slow down after the All Star break. This has happened before and will happen again. Young pitchers come into the league and dominate until they have to start facing these same teams over and over again.

Look for Harvey to put together a respectable year but the Cy Young talk seems a bit premature. Plus if the season ends today Harvey most likely still wouldn’t get the Cy. Remember there is some guy over in Los Angeles who goes by the name of Clayton Kershaw who knows a thing or two about pitching.
