The Colorado Rockies have identified their man, and they are hoping that he doesn’t go the way of previous targets Brian McCann, Carlos Ruiz and Jose Abreu, to another team willing to spend more money. Luckily for them, there does not appear to be a big name team looking at Justin Morneau that can come in and swoop in and take him away. So is Morneau’s perfect landing spot in Colorado?
For Morneau it is for sure the best landing spot in the league. The Rockies need a first baseman now that Todd Helton has retired, Morneau has a good buddy in the form of Michael Cuddyer on the team, and Colorado has spring training near his offseason home in Arizona. What more could Morneau ask for? Oh yeah, the ball flies out of Coors Field and could inflate some of Morneau’s numbers that declined so bad when the Twins moved to the spacious Target Field.
Is Morneau the best fit for the Rockies, though? It is hard to say yes to this because they Rockies need someone to step up and fill the power void when Troy Tulowitzki eventually gets hurt again, because past history has shown that he will, to protect Carlos Gonzalez. While Morneau has proven he could be that power guy in the past with an MVP win, a runner-up for the same award, and the win in the Home Run Derby, but Morneau is no longer that guy.
What he can be, though, for the Rockies is that veteran in the clubhouse who has been to the playoffs and knows what it takes to get back there. He is a hard worker who leads by example on the field, and hey, with that thin air in Colorado maybe, just maybe, he can be that guy again. Either way, he can be good for the Rockies, and that’s good because the only guy out there other than him who fits that mold and actually has power is Paul Konerko, and who knows if he can return to form. One way or another, Morneau is their man, and it appears that this time they are going to get their man.
