While big moves generally don’t happen this early into the off season as teams and players tend to wait until the winter meeting to make the big splashy moves. That doesn’t moves and rumors alike don’t spread like wildfires.
Recently there have a ton of rumors about will be the Yankees next shortstop. While many fans think Troy Tulowitzki would be a good fit, Cashmtan has had a firm stance in recent years when it comes to not trading his prospects. Cashman is standing firm and seems content with not trading his top prospects for the injury riddled superstar. Other rumors that have been circling, are possible trades for the Phillies Jimmy Rollins and the Rangers Elvis Andrus. Andrus however has a monster contract starting next season that will take him until his age 34 season.
The Yankees aren’t the only team rumored to be interested in Jimmy Rollins. The Mariners and the Mets have both shown interest in the shortstop. Both teams have struggled to find a solution to the rotating door that is their shortstop position. The Phillies however are unlikely to trade within the division and any trade would need to be approved by Rollins and that team must not be on his list of 10-15 teams that he can’t be traded to.
The other flying around involves another N.L. East team, the Braves. They are rumored to shopping around catcher/outfielder Evan Gattis. The asking price is said to be steep, and a deal seems unlikely leaving the Braves to find another way to add pitching this of season.
As of today the Phillies have made some slight moves including signing Jeff Francoeur to a minor league deal.
There was also a trade last night between the Pirates and the Yankees. The Yankees traded backup catcher Francisco Cervelli for a much needed left handed bullpen piece in Justin Wilson. Cervelli has shown glimpses of being a capable starting catcher but has never been able to stay healthy long enough and therefore has been relegated to backup duties, and only the starter for the Yankees when injuries forced him into the role. Last year Wilson owned a 4.20 ERA but for his career has a 2.99 ERA and gives the Yankees a much needed left handed arm out of the bullpen.
This is one of the more fun times to be a baseball fan. New rumors about your favorite team circulate every day as teams try to better themselves for next year. You may say some signings or little trades here and there but the real fun begins at the winter meetings.
