Have you taken a look at the New York Yankees roster lately? Let me give you a quick synopsis when you go down the list: injured, old, old, old, injured, old, Derek Jeter, old, old, old, injured, Kevin Youkilis, Ichiro Suzuki.
Now after evaluating that roster, it’s hard to think about the Yankees really taking this team into playoffs, let alone a World Series Championship. It began last season when Alex Rodriguez (18 homeruns and .272 batting average last year) decided he was not going to hit the ball, but instead write his number on it and give it to models in the stands. (Am I the only one who questioned why there were models at a baseball game? I digress.)
Recently big-name Yankees' Mark Teixeira (out for 8-10 weeks with strained right wrist) and Curtis Granderson (sidelined for 10 weeks after a forearm fracture due to a hit by pitch) became injured, so the boys in stripes are down two impact players for their team. Not to mention Jeter who is still freshly back from a surgically repaired ankle thanks to an injury that occurred last season, the team is looking weak to say the least. So you would think General Manager Brian Cashman would be out on the hunt searching for players for the corners. Well he is, however he is only interested in players that will add an “oldie but goodie” quality to the team.
Cashman is interested in signing former Hall of Fame 1st basemen Derrek Lee, who would be a great name to have on the roster, and he’s a huge target at the bag, but he is up there in age. He's been also interested in adding Scott Rolen to the roster. This will not help the team either. Especially because he is in his 30’s, hit only eight bombs last year and had a .245 batting average with the Reds. Cashman even joked to reports about getting the word out on twitter to have Chipper Jones play at the hot corner. I think Jones wants to end on a good note, not a bad one Brian.
Mariano Rivera and his 608 career saves, recently announced his retirement, and while he is one of the veterans on the team, he is promising on the bump; however he alone cannot carry that team to playoffs. Brett Gardner is younger, and definitely has a promising career ahead of him with the Yankees, so make sure you watch out for him, especially you fantasy guys if you want a solid outfielder, but once again, he will not cause a Cinderella story and make the Yankees win a ring. He will hit around .300 this season however.
That leaves you with Youkilis who, like the other is up in age. He can hit the ball well, but he doesn’t exactly hit them over the fence. He hit 19 homeruns last year, and hasn’t been playing wonderfully this spring. Who knows what will happen with him when A-Rod comes back.
The Yankees are not going to have a superb season to say the least. Good news for everyone else, bad news for the Yankees. They will eventually be able to become the “elite” team we all know, and do not love, but don’t expect that to be this season. This team is starting to go down faster than the Titanic.
