When the Oakland Athletics scratched scheduled starter Kendall Graveman before his outing, many speculated on a potential injury. Sure enough that is the case as it was revealed Graveman experienced renewed discomfort in his shoulder and is likely headed for the disabled list. In his place, the team would call up Jharel Cotton, who would return after a two-start stint in the minor leagues.
The 25-year-old Cotton started the season in Oakland's rotation, but the results were mixed. In seven starts, Cotton surrendered five-plus runs in four of them and failed to make it past the fifth inning in three starts. So, the A's sent him down to Triple-A Nashville where he surrendered three runs in 12 innings and posted a 13/1 K/BB ratio. Cotton is expected to slide into Graveman's spot in the rotation and start against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Graveman lands on the disabled list for a second time in five weeks with the same ailment. While the move isn't an official, it is expected within the next few hours with Cotton's arrival in New York and Oakland's roster already limited as it is. The 26-year-old could see a more cautious approach this time around given the renewed pitching shoulder discomfort and that could lead to missing more time than he did back at the end of April.
In eight starts this season, Graveman holds a 3.83 ERA, 4.35 FIP and 6.13 K/9 rate. Given the low strikeout rate and mediocre numbers, it's likely time for fantasy owners to move on from Graveman in 12-team leagues. DL spots are increasingly valuable given the number of injuries and Graveman simply isn't worth stashing on the DL given the limited fantasy appeal he offers.
