Quick Take: Tigers and Rangers Swap Prince Fielder for Ian Kinsler

A major blockbuster trade has shaken the baseball world, as Prince Fielder is now a Texas Ranger and Ian Kinsler is a Detroit Tiger.

This trade should have a positive impact on both sides.

After two straight losses in the World Series in 2010 and 2011, the Texas Rangers were looking for a consistent first baseman. They made a strong push for Fielder when he became a free agent in Winter 2011, but fell short as he was signed by Detroit.

Now, after regressing in both 2012 and 2013, the Rangers have filled the void at arguably the most important offensive position in baseball. If Fielder can return to his old form, he will be able to provide a big boost in a Texas lineup that has recently lost Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and most likely Nelson Cruz.

Also, the Rangers have tried to give some experience to their highly-touted middle infield prospect Jurickson Profar, but have had trouble since Elvis Andrus is the everyday shortstop and Kinsler was the everyday second baseman.

Now, Profar can play second base full-time.

On the Detroit side, this deal was obviously done to free up some more salary to spend on Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, who will be a free agent after 2014.

This also gives the Tigers some money to go out and sign a relief pitcher like Joe Nathan or a left fielder like Carlos Beltran.

Also, this move automatically makes Detroit's defense MUCH better. Miguel Cabrera will move back to first base, where he is at his best. In fact, it is probably safe to say that the back-to-back reigning MVP is even an above-average defensive first baseman.

This leaves a void at third, but it will likely be filled by highly-touted prospect Nick Castellanos, who was forced to play an unfamiliar left field once Fielder signed with the team two years ago.

Lastly, adding a good all-around player in Kinsler takes some weight off of Detroit's shoulders when it comes to signing a second baseman or trying to bring back Omar Infante.
