The week leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline brings its share of twists and turns. The Boston Red sox didn't plan to target starting pitchers, but that may have to change.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher David Price, who missed the first two months of the season with elbow soreness, has renewed soreness in his pitching elbow and landed on the disabled list Friday.
Price, who is already under scrutiny from Red Sox fans and others in Boston for his repeated clashes with the media and an incident with Dennis Eckersley, now will draw more attention due to another trip on the disabled list. The 31-year-old could have opted to undergo Tommy John Surgery before the season began, but opted to rest and attempt a return given he is in the later stage of his career.
Since his return to the mound, Price owns a 3.82 ERA across 11 starts on the season. He isn't quite performing at the lines fans are used to from his career, but over his past eight starts he registered a 3.31 ERA, 3.30 FIP and 15.5 percent K-BB rate.
The southpaw will undergo an MRI later, which should provide further information and a better idea of when Price could come off the disabled list. If it's an extended absence, Boston might have to explore adding someone to its rotation at the trade deadline.
