The Detroit Tigers have moved on from veteran pitcher Mike Pelfrey after just one season with the team. They announced his released on Thursday as part of the process to get down to a 25-man roster prior to Opening Day.
Pelfrey had already lost out on a starting job following a disastrous 2016 campaign that saw him post a 4-10 record with a 5.07 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 24 appearances (22 starts). By releasing Pelfrey, the Tigers made the decision to eat his $8 million salary for the 2017 campaign.
From a fantasy perspective, this is a clear indication that Matt Boyd has earned a spot in the rotation. Pelfrey was pelted to the tune of 15 runs and 24 hits in 17 innings during the spring. Ouch.
