Washington Nationals Place CP Shawn Kelley on Disabled List

No matter what happens this year and no matter who wins the World Series, we will remember this season as the year seemingly every pitcher landed on the disabled list. The latest name is Washington Nationals closer Shawn Kelley, who missed the team's past three games with an illness then the team suddenly announced Friday that he would be placed on the DL with a lower back strain.

Kelley, who took over the closer's role when Blake Treinen blew up several opportunities, had his DL trip backdated to May 2. For the team, this means they could activated him a few days earlier and perhaps this injury isn't as concerning long-term as it could have been.

But for a closer who consistently has had issues with health and staying on the mound, this especially raises concerns. Even more so for a Nationals team that had concerns about his durability and doubts if he could pitch back-to-back days. Kelley did that just once this year and now with a backs train, manager Dusty Baker could have even more reservations about Kelley as the closer.

With Koda Glover on the disabled list, Washington could dive further into its rotation for closer-by-committee. Enny Romero, who has allowed 15 hits and seven earned runs in 12 innings pitched this season, and he could share the job with Joe Blanton and his 10.64 ERA. The lone positive for the Nationals is Glover could be just a few days away from returning from the disabled list.

It's a messy closer situation right now in Washington and even when everyone is healthy, this group seems destined for a committee. But even if one can hold onto the job, it's a near certainty that the Nationals trade for a closer by the trade deadline. It's easy to see a contender and want their closer, but right now the situation is far too messy to trust anyone in fantasy.
