Week five is in the books! The season is slowly progressing and we are now in full tilt baseball mode. Week five is no different than any other week of the season, with a surprising group of players performing higher than firstly anticipated. Without further ado, here are the surprises of the week.
Ryan Raburn Right Fielder, Cleveland Indians
What a week this guy had here. In his past six games he has hit four home runs and drove in nine by himself. He also scored five runs of his own this week and had an impressive average of .481. The Cleveland Indians really needed him to step up since Michael Bourn has been hurt, and that is exactly what he has done. His strikeout numbers were a bit glaring this week, with eight but when you are getting a .400 average, you can live with it.
Yonder Alonso First Basemen, San Diego Padres
Easily the most surprising performance of the week goes to this man. He had a week high, nine RBIs along with a .370 batting average. He stole a base this week as well as being walked three times. To be honest, I have no idea who this guy is and was completely shocked when I saw that he led the majors in RBIs this week. Who knows, he might just be the next big star in San Diego. Or, it could be a flook and you won’t see him drive in another run all year. Either way he had an awesome week and deserves to be on this list!
Michael Brantley Left Fielder, Cleveland Indians
Behold the run scoring machine that is Michael Brantley. This man had the second most runs scored of all players this week, along with four RBIs and he even got a home run in there. He also recorded a triple this week and three doubles! His speed is what makes him such a threat with every at bat. He isn’t necessarily a home run hitter but is a career .275 hitter. Look for this 26-year-old to have his best season in the bigs in 2013.
