What Have We Learned To This Point In the MLB Season

Every season in Major League Baseball is a learning experience. There is something new that happens every single season. What did we learn last year? I think everyone learned that no one knows how the infield fly rule works. Also, everyone learned that you can’t buy a baseball team. We’re looking at you Angels... To this point in the 2013 season the same is true. Once again we are looking at you, Angels. AND you, Toronto Blue Jays. Heck, and you Los Angeles Dodgers.

We are at the quarter mark in the season and a lot of interesting topics have come up. The New York Yankees are still the Yankees and can win with anyone on the field. The Houston Astros and Miami Marlins are the worst team in baseball. I don’t know if that was learned or if everyone already knew it. We also learned that strikeouts are going to become a big part of baseball. Every year for the past six years the strikeout totals have went up. The Astros and Braves are on pace to break strikeout records. The Astros are coming after the Oakland Athletics record of 2012.

The Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics shocked the baseball world last season and are proving that it was not a fluke. The Orioles are 25-21 and Chris Davis is slowly turning into a superstar. The Athletics are also playing well with a record of 25-23. Both of these teams have good chances to make the playoffs and go deep into October.

The final thing that has been learned to this point in the season has to do with instant replay. I for one and stuck between whether they should add extra replays into the game. Sure, it makes sense to add instant replay so the correct call can be made. The only problem I have is that the umpires can’t even get the calls right with replay now. Look to the Athletics versus Indians game that was straight butchered. I assume they will add something to the league and if it was up to me they would have an umpire that sits in a booth and reviews plays. The home plate umpire would then have a microphone in his ear and could be told what the correct call is. This would keep the game at decent pace and would help maximize what is correct.

We are only a quarter of the way through the season and will learn a lot more as the season continues. At least there is one thing we can always count on and that is the Chicago Cubs never winning a World Series.
