Padres at Phillies
The San Diego Padres struck out 14
times in their series-opening loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on
Friday. Light-hitting San Diego won't receive any favors Saturday when
they face two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay at Citizens Bank
Park.
Despite its troubles, Philadelphia's bullpen tossed three
scoreless innings to preserve a 7-3 triumph in the opener. The victory
was the Phillies' eighth in 11 meetings with San Diego.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Edinson Volquez (1-2, 2.98 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Roy Halladay (3-2, 3.28)
After
scattering only three hits in his previous two outings, Volquez finally
secured his first victory by holding Colorado at bay Monday. The
28-year-old Dominican allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Volquez has won two of three career decisions versus the Phillies,
limiting them to a .185 batting average while registering a 1.04 WHIP.
Halladay
bounced back from a dreadful performance against Atlanta to look more
like his old self against the New York Mets. The veteran permitted two
runs on five hits and struck out seven in seven innings, but settled for
his second straight no-decision. Halladay suffered his first career
loss to the Padres in four decisions on April 21, although he only
yielded two runs on five hits in seven innings.
WALK-OFFS
1.
With Ryan Howard and Chase Utley sidelined with injuries, Carlos Ruiz
has done his best to pick up the slack. Ruiz belted his third homer in
May - the most in this month during his career.
2. San Diego's
Yonder Alonso homered and had an RBI single Friday to extend his hitting
streak to eight games. Alonso had a double in three career at-bats
versus Halladay.
3. Philadelphia placed first baseman Laynce Nix
on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain. San Diego was also
busy in that regard, putting right-hander Joe Wieland on the 15-day
disabled list with a strain right elbow.
