Royals at Indians

The Kansas City Royals have a chance to climb into the middle of both the American League Central and wild-card races in the next eight days. That quest begins with ace James Shields on the mound Wednesday for the rubber match of the critical three-game series at the Cleveland Indians. The Royals are three games behind Tampa Bay for the second AL wild-card spot and seven back in the AL Central with a three-game series looming at first-place Detroit over the weekend.

Cleveland stands 1 ½ games ahead of the Royals and travels to Kansas City for another three-game set next week. The Indians had 12 hits, but bounced into three big double plays in the 6-3 loss to the Royals on Tuesday. Carlos Santana is 6-for-16 with four RBIs in the last five games for Cleveland, which is 9-6 against Kansas City in 2013 – including 6-2 at home.
