Mets at Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets have been searching for ways to beat themselves. Both clubs will try to cut down on the mistakes and take the rubber game when the Mets finish up a three-game series at the Brewers on Sunday. Milwaukee made three errors in a 12-5 loss in the opener and New York had a pair of miscues in a 7-6 setback Saturday.

The Brewers have been a solid hitting team for most of the season but have not been able to overcome their pitching woes. The Mets are among the worst teams in the majors in most hitting categories but have pushed across 18 runs in the first two games of the series. The Brewers have yet to lose a series to a National League East team.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jeremy Hefner (3-6, 3.54 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Tom Gorzelanny (1-1, 2.43)

Hefner has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in each of his last eight starts and is coming off a win over Arizona in which he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. The 27-year-old is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in his last four turns. Hefner has made one relief appearance against Milwaukee in his career and yielded a solo home run to Rickie Weeks.

Gorzelanny will start in place of Wily Peralta, who was pushed back due to a left hamstring injury. Gorzelanny has made one other start among his 33 appearances this season, allowing a run on five hits over four innings against Philadelphia on June 8. The veteran swingman is 4-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 21 career games (eight starts) against New York.
