Giants at Athletics
The Oakland Athletics did the expected and dealt ace Sonny Gray before Monday's non-waiver trade deadline, but they managed to go on and emerge victorious in the Bay Bridge Series opener anyway. Oakland looks to extend its winning streak to four games when it hosts the San Francisco Giants for the second contest of the four-game, home-and-home set Tuesday.
The last-place Athletics completed their recent housecleaning by shipping Gray to the New York Yankees for a trio of prospects but were not fazed by the deal as they used a 12-hit attack to post an 8-5 triumph on Monday. Marcus Semien delivered the big blow, belting his second career grand slam in the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit, while Jed Lowrie, who reportedly was on the trading block, collected three hits to improve to 6-for-13 over his last three contests. San Francisco looks to salvage the finale of its five-game road trip before the Bay Bridge Series shifts to AT&T Park on Wednesday. Gorkys Hernandez is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he has gone 7-for-17 while outfielder Carlos Moncrief, who walked in his major-league debut Saturday, went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Monday is his first career start for the Giants.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (5-11, 4.85 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (8-5, 3.82)
Samardzija is coming off one of his best outings of the season, a victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday in which he allowed one run and four hits over seven innings. The 32-year-old native of Indiana kept the ball in the park for the first time in five turns while registering at least eight strikeouts for the 11th time this year. Samardzija, who made 16 starts for Oakland in 2014, is 1-2 with a 10.06 ERA in three outings against his former club.
Manaea has lost only two of his last 13 outings, recording seven victories in that span. The 25-year-old, who also hails from the Hoosier State, allowed three runs over seven innings in a no-decision at Toronto on Thursday and did not issue a walk for the first time in 12 turns. Manaea won his only career start against San Francisco on June 29, 2016, when he scattered six hits over 5 2/3 scoreless frames.
