Red Sox 5, Mariners 1

Jon Lester had 12 strikeouts in eight innings and Ryan Kalish hit a two-run homer as the Boston Red Sox earned a 5-1 victory and handed the Seattle Mariners their fifth consecutive loss on Monday night.

Lester (17-8) allowed three singles, two to Chone Figgins, and the one run. Lester, a native of nearby Puyallup, Wash., won his fourth in a row.

Boston scored three runs in the second. Adrian Beltre led off with a single, Jed Lowrie doubled and Josh Reddick grounded out, scoring Beltre. Daniel Nava doubled to right, scoring Lowrie for a 2-0 lead and Lars Anderson doubled in Nava.

Casey Kotchman drove in Seattle's run in the seventh after Franklin Gutierrez singled. The Mariners had runners on first and second but Lester ended the rally.

Kalish then gave the Red Sox breathing room with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Seattle's Doug Fister (5-12) allowed the three runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss. He had three strikeouts with no walks.
