Tigers 3, White Sox 2
Alex Avila's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning propelled the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
Avila's go-ahead home run came off White Sox reliever J.J. Putz (2-0), who was filling in for regular closer Bobby Jenks (back). Putz surrendered a leadoff single to Brandon Inge, and one out later was taken deep by Avila, who belted a drive to left-center for his fifth home run of the season.
Detroit reliever Phil Coke (7-2), who came in to record the final out of the eighth inning, stayed on to finish things up in the ninth as the Tigers avenged a series-opening 8-4 loss to the White Sox a night earlier.
Carlos Guillen also went deep for the Tigers, who received a strong start from Rick Porcello. The 21-year-old allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out three.
Chicago hurler Edwin Jackson was sensational in a no-decision, limiting the Tigers to a run on five hits over seven innings while striking out 11.
