White Sox 2, Angels 1
Alex Rios singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox nipped the host Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Friday night.
Rios’ single to center field against Fernando Rodney (4-3) scored Juan Pierre from second base with the decisive run.
Chicago reliever Matt Thornton (5-4) got the final out in the eighth and then struck out the side in the ninth.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Howie Kendrick tripled and scored on Torii Hunter’s single to center.
Chicago tied the score in the fifth when Paul Konerko hit his 38th homer of the season.
Joel Pineiro pitched eight strong innings for the Angels. Pineiro allowed one run and four hits. He didn’t issue any walks while striking out two.
White Sox starter Freddy Garcia gave up one run and four hits in six innings. Garcia struck out five and walked two.
Kendrick had three of Los Angeles’ six hits.
