White Sox 4, Angels 3

Juan Pierre tripled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on Omar Vizquel’s single as the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Sunday.

The two seventh-inning runs off Angels ace Jered Weaver allowed the White Sox to sweep the three-game series. Matt Thornton retired the last six hitters to record his seventh save of the season.

The Angels gave Weaver runs to work with by scoring three times in the first. Bobby Abreu doubled in the first run and scored on Torii Hunter’s single. Hunter scored later in the inning on Hank Conger’s single.

Chicago scored in the second on Mark Teahen’s sacrifice fly and then pulled within 3-2 on Carlos Quentin’s sixth-inning single.

Weaver (13-12) struck out nine to take over the major-league lead in strikeouts (229). He gave up four runs – three earned – and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Chicago starter Tony Pena (5-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings.
