Royals 1, Angels 2
Bobby Abreu finished off a sensational series with a 10th-inning homer to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon.
Abreu’s one-out shot off reliever Jesse Chavez (1-1) gave the Angels a sweep of the Royals and their fifth win in six games.
Abreu went 7-for-12 with two homers and five RBIs in the series and his game-winning blast trumped a fine pitcher’s duel between a pair of aces in Jered Weaver and Zack Greinke.
Weaver struck out 11 in eight innings and allowed one run, six hits and two walks. The lone run off the right-hander was Yuniesky Betancourt’s leadoff homer in the sixth inning.
Greinke, the 2009 Cy Young Award winner, allowed one run and six hits in eight innings. He struck out six and walked one. The Angels’ only damage against Greinke came across on Erick Aybar’s sacrifice fly in the third.
Brian Fuentes (4-1) recorded the victory, striking out two during a scoreless 10th.
Mike Aviles had three of Kansas City’s seven hits as the Royals lost their fourth straight and went 2-7 on a nine-game road trip.
