Blue Jays 6, Yankees 3

Vernon Wells homered and drove in four runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.

Brett Cecil (11-6) picked up the win, scattering seven hits over eight innings. He allowed two runs and fanned five.

Wells opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first inning. He then added his 23rd home run in the third, a two-run shot to give Toronto a 4-0 lead.

Marcus Thames had a two-run homer in the fourth for New York to cut the lead to 4-2.

But Wells drove in another run in the fourth inning on an infield single and Aaron Hill added a solo homer in the fifth to make it 6-2.

New York made things interesting in the ninth. After the first batters were retired, the Yankees got two walks and a single to cut the lead to 6-3. Kevin Gregg then hit Derek Jeter with a pitch to load the bases but Curtis Granderson flew out to center field to end the game.

The Yankees remained tied atop the American League East standings with the Tampa Bay Rays, who also lost Wednesday.

Phil Hughes (15-6) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the year.

Javier Vazquez followed Hughes and completed the game. He allowed one run on two hits in 4 1/3 innings. Vazquez was moved to the bullpen Tuesday after the Yankees announced they would skip his turn in the rotation.
