Marlins 7, Braves 1
Cameron Maybin and Logan Morrison led off the game with back-to-back home runs and the Florida Marlins rode the stellar pitching of Chris Volstad to a 7-1 victory over the skidding Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
Dan Uggla and Gaby Sanchez added solo homers for the Marlins, who sent the National League East-leading Braves to their fourth consecutive defeat.
Volstad (8-9) was the beneficiary of the home run barrage. He had blanked Atlanta on five hits until rookie Jason Heyward drilled a one-out homer in the eighth inning. He struck out three and did not walk a batter in winning his second straight start.
Braves starter Tommy Hanson (8-10) yielded all four solo blasts in absorbing his fifth consecutive defeat. He was battered for seven runs - six earned - on eight hits in five-plus innings.
Hanson had not allowed a homer in his previous seven innings. He has not won since beating the Marlins on July 3.
Uggla, who went deep for the 29th time this season, has four homers and nine RBIs in his last five games vs. Atlanta.
Braves closer Billy Wagner set a major league record for most career strikeouts by a lefty reliever with 1,170, passing Jesse Orosco.
