Pirates 5, Padres 8
Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a two-run homer and Adrian Gonzalez had four hits and drove in two runs to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.
Ryan Ludwick, Yorvit Torrealba and Chase Headley each drove in a run as San Diego beat Pittsburgh for the eighth straight time.
The Padres jumped out to a 7-0 lead, which was enough support for Kevin Correia (9-7). The right-hander gave up four runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven against one walk.
San Diego scored a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and another in the sixth to grab the seven-run cushion. The Pirates broke through with four runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to get within 7-5, but Headley’s blast in the bottom half gave the Padres some extra separation.
Heath Bell worked a perfect ninth inning for his 33rd save of the season.
Pittsburgh starter James McDonald (1-2) was charged with four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 frames. He struck out six and walked one.
Ryan Doumit drove in a pair of runs to lead the Pirates’ attack.
