Rangers 9, Red Sox 5
David Murphy’s two-run double in the eighth inning broke open a tie game and lifted the Texas Rangers to a 9-5 win over the Boston Red Sox in the season opener for both teams Friday.
Texas, the defending American League champions, belted three home runs in the game off Boston starter Jon Lester.
Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and three RBIs in his Boston debut. The Red Sox led 2-0 and 4-2 in the game, but Texas took the lead on a three-run homer by Mike Napoli in the bottom of the fourth.
David Ortiz tied the game at 5 with a solo homer with two outs in the eighth inning off Darren Oliver (1-0), but Texas scored four times in the bottom of the inning off loser Daniel Bard (0-1).
Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz also homered in the game for Texas.
Neither starter figured in the decision. C.J. Wilson fanned six in 5 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Lester was tagged for five runs on six hits and failed to strike out a batter.
