Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 1

Jed Lowrie continued his torrid stretch at the plate and Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched seven shutout innings as the host Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 Monday afternoon.

Lowrie went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs as the Red Sox won a season-high third straight game. Lowrie is 15 for his last 24 and is hitting .516.

Matsuzaka (1-2) entered the game with an ERA near 13 but allowed just one hit and one walk and retired the last 16 batters he faced to lower his ERA to 6.43.

Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury also homered for Boston (5-10), which had a season-high for both runs and hits (13).

Ricky Romero (1-2) took the loss for the Blue Jays (7-9). He allowed five runs on eight hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Yunel Escobar snapped the shutout with a solo home run in the ninth inning off Tim Wakefield.
