Boston hit three homers to back winning pitcher Clay Buchholz, and the Red Sox defeated the Oakland A's 5-3 for their first road win of the season Wednesday afternoon.
J.D. Drew, Jed Lowrie and Kevin Youkilis homered for Boston (6-11). Buchholz (1-2) allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings and Jonathan Papelbon allowed one run in the ninth before notching the save.
Coco Crisp homered on Buchholz’s first pitch of the game. Boston tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Carl Crawford in the second inning. Boston then built a 5-1 lead powered by the home run ball.
Gio Gonzalez (2-1) took the loss. He allowed four runs in six innings on eight hits while fanning nine. Oakland (9-9) left 15 men on base in the game including the tying runs in the ninth inning.
Boston had lost its first seven road games of the season.
