Red Sox 4, Angels 3

Jon Lester pitched six scoreless innings and the visiting Boston Red Sox dealt Los Angeles Angels starter Dan Haren his first loss of the season 4-3 Friday night.

Haren (4-1) had been nearly unhittable in April, but he was outdueled by Lester (2-1), who struck out eight and scattered four hits.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save and third in three days

Haren lasted six innings, giving up four runs – two earned – and fanned six as the Angels dropped their 11 game in 12 tries against Boston.

The Red Sox jumped ahead in the third inning when catcher Jared Saltalamacchia doubled and scored on Jacoby Ellsbury’s two-out double with two outs. The Red Sox made it 3-0 in the fourth after Peter Bourjos’ error allowed Jed Lowrie and J.D. Drew to score.

Boston added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Drew (2-for-3) off Haren, who matched his season total for runs allowed coming into Friday’s game.

Los Angeles scored a run in the seventh and scored two in the eight to close within 4-3.
