Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 3

John McDonald homered and drove in a season-high three runs as the host Toronto Blue Jays routed the Boston Red Sox 9-3 on Wednesday night.

The utility infielder smacked a solo home run in the fourth inning off losing pitcher John Lackey and added a two-run double in the pivotal five-run seventh. The Blue Jays (17-20) cruised from there to earn a mini-sweep of their two-game series with the division-rival Red Sox (17-20).

Rajai Davis added four hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in support of winning pitcher Jesse Litsch (4-2). The righthander worked out of trouble all night long, allowing three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Lackey (2-5) was torched for nine runs on 10 hits with five walks over 6 2/3 innings as his ERA ballooned to 8.01.

Adrian Gonzalez hit his third homer in the past two games and David Ortiz also went deep for the second straight night for the Red Sox.

Red Sox hurler Tim Wakefield made history with a seventh-inning appearance when he became the oldest player in Boston franchise history at 44 years, 282 days. Wakefield was two days older than former record-holder Deacon McGuire, who set the mark in 1908.
