Tigers 3, Red Sox 0 (Game 2)
Justin Verlander threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers salvaged the second game of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox 3-0 at Comerica Park on Sunday night.
Verlander (5-3) allowed just four hits in the contest and fanned three while walking two. Jose Valverde, who took the loss in the first game of the twin bill, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 12th save.
It was Detroit’s first win in six tries against the Red Sox this season and snapped Boston’s five-game winning streak.
The Tigers scored twice in the first inning off loser Josh Beckett (4-2). Andy Dirks walked with one out and Brennan Boesch followed with an RBI double. Miguel Cabrera plated Boesch with a single to right field.
The Tigers added an insurance run on an RBI single by Don Kelly in the eighth that followed a double by Cabrera.
Beckett allowed two runs on five hits and five walks in six innings.
Boston won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3.
