Padres 5, Red Sox 1 (8)

Clayton Richard threw five effective innings in between heavy rains and Will Venable homered as the San Diego Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 Wednesday.

The game was called after eight innings and four rain delays.

With rain engulfing much of the Northeast, the teams sat through delays of 35, 38, 31 and 41 minutes. The game, scheduled to start at 1:35, was called more than five hours later after rains interrupted the eighth inning.

Adrian Gonzalez capped the first series against his former team with four hits and his major league-leading 69th RBI, but it wasn’t enough. Boston has lost two straight for the first time since a four-game losing streak from May 29-June 1.

Richard (3-9), determined to end a five-game losing streak, re-emerged in the fifth after the third rain delay. He allowed one run and eight hits. The Padres bullpen, which held Boston scoreless for the final 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday, helped Richard earn his first win since May 16.

After a 35-minute delay, Venable hit the sixth pitch from John Lackey (5-6) just right of Pesky’s Pole for his first homer of the season. San Diego tacked on four runs in the fourth on just two hits.
