Red Sox 12, Royals 5
David Ortiz hit a grand slam, one of three Boston homers on the night, and the Red Sox hammered the Kansas City Royals 12-5 at Fenway Park on Wednesday.
Ortiz drove in four runs to become the sixth player in Red Sox history to drive in 1,000 runs for the club.
Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia led off the game with back-to-back homers for Boston. Both players finished with three hits and two RBIs.
Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 24 games and Adrian Gonzalez had three hits and three RBIs.
John Lackey (9-8) struggled but still got the win. He allowed 11 hits and four runs, including a three-run homer by Eric Hosmer in the top of the first inning. Billy Butler also homered for the Royals.
Bruce Chen (5-4) allowed 10 runs on 10 hits in four innings to take the loss. Boston finished with 16 hits in the game.
Kansas City got three hits each from Butler and Alex Gordon and also finished with 16 for the game.
